Academics from one of Australia’s top 20 universities have warned the country could deter international students unless it improves access to post-study employment opportunities. The warning comes despite Australia introducing the most generous post-study work rights of any leading study destination last year.

The findings follow vast improvements to post-study work rights introduced last November.

Cate Gribble and Jill Blackmore from Deakin University , Melbourne, interviewed 130 international students of nursing, accounting and engineering as well as employers, government officials and university staff.

They found foreign work experience was increasingly important to students and employers in countries such as China. However, many students were unhappy with their opportunities to gain practical experience in Australia before returning home, and said they lacked the contacts of their domestic peers.

“Students come with certain expectations that they will get employment, particularly if they come in a skill shortage area, but that is often not the case,” Blackmore told World News Australia .

“They have to go out and find an employer who’s prepared to sponsor them, and that is very difficult,” she said.

The researchers argue the government, providers and companies must create more work experience opportunities, or risk losing enrolments. ”I think international students might consider going to other places where there are more opportunities for work placements,” said Gribble.

The findings follow vast improvements to post-study work rights introduced last November as part of reforms to stem an ongoing decline in overseas enrolments.

Bachelor degree students may now stay in the country and work for two years after graduation, master’s students for three years, and PHD students for four years. Professor Lesleyanne Hawthorne of Melbourne University said there was no “comparable offer from our competitors” and that problems may lie with individual students.

“Every country has its own labour market needs and it will be about the attractiveness of the international student who applies,” she said.

There have been other positive signs for international job seekers, according to a Graduate Careers Australia survey in February. While the percentage of employers recruiting international graduates fell nearly 15% after the financial crisis and stayed flat in 2010, last year saw a climb of almost 12%.

However, employers admitted they were sometimes deterred from hiring foreign graduates due to concerns about retention or because they lacked citizenship.

Australia’s overseas student market is estimated to contribute around $15.7 billion to the economy. However enrolments have been hit by a persistently high dollar and visa concerns and fell in the year to February to 46,379 (down 8.9%).

Employment: Your future. Your world.

Studying in Australia gives you a competitive edge.
One of the great advantages of gaining an Australian qualification is the opportunities it will provide you when it comes time to find employment. No matter where you want to start your career, your qualification will be recognised as a mark of a quality education.
Employers in Australia and around the world hold Australian graduates in high esteem. Thousands of graduates are recruited every year in all career fields. From traditional fields, such as business, finance, law and medicine, to emerging industries, such as environmental sustainability, digital media, biotechnology, nanotechnology and e-commerce, your Australian qualification will provide you with an excellent platform from which to further your career.

Employment assistance

Many Australian universities and higher education institutions offer returning home seminars for international students. These seminars will prepare you to re-enter your home country and provide advice on finding a job.
There are a number of recruitment companies in Australia and around the world that offer careers counselling and link graduates with prospective employers. Many large corporations run their own graduate recruitment service, and value graduates with international experience such as an Australian qualification.
The Australian Government has also been very active in developing Memoranda of Understanding and qualifications recognition between Australia and other countries. They can also advise you where to find information about employment and further study opportunities in Australia and in your country.

Skilled Migration Program

The Australian Government skilled migration program targets young people who have skills, an education and outstanding abilities that will contribute to the Australian economy. Please visit the Department of Immigration and Citizenship’s website.

Post-Study Work Arrangements

From 2013, graduates of Australian Bachelors, Masters and PhD courses will be able to apply for a post-study work visa. The visa will enable them to gain practical experience in Australia for up to four years after graduation. To be eligible, graduates must have lodged their student visa application after 5 November 2011.

More detailed advice about eligibility requirements will be made available as legislation to support the visa is put into place. For further information please visit: www.immi.gov.au/students/knight/

Returning Home to Work

During your final year you should research the labour market in your home country and explore the career options available to you. Spend some time focusing on your job search!

All businesses need expertise in the areas of accountancy, general management, marketing and / or production.

A successful business is one that clearly determines its aims, and uses its resources to achieve those aims.

Step 1 : analyse objectives

Step 2 : evaluate potential

Step 3 : determine your business structure

Step 4 : assess profitabilty

Step 5 : register business name

Tips for success

Step 1: analyse objectives

If you want to start a business, the first step is to analyse your objectives honestly.

What skills do you have and what skills can you acquire?

Will you find it interesting? (You will be spending a lot of time with the business, so it’s important you enjoy it.)

What do you hope to get out of it?

What do you wish your business to achieve?

Experience shows that your business is more likely to be successful if there is a matching of your skills, experience, knowledge and interests with the business. Your business should build on your talents and be one in which you will remain enthusiastic and aware of your customers’ needs. From the range of business opportunities available, choose the one that appeals to you and for which you have (or can obtain) the skills and resources needed.

Step 2: evaluate potential

The second factor in choosing the right business is to assess the value and viability of the business. To start and operate a successful business, you must first gain a thorough knowledge of the business and its customers and competitors. You will also need:

technical knowledge – how to produce a product or services

sales and marketing skills

financial ability to plan and control the money matters

capital.

If you lack any of these skills, you may need to bring in partners, employees or consultants who have them, or acquire the skills yourself. It is important to realistically appraise the business’s total capital requirements, by determining:

cost of all plant and equipment the business needs

working capital requirements for stock, accounts receivable (debtors) and operating expenses such as rent, power and wages during the development period, until the business can generate sufficient cash flow from sales to become self sustaining.

Step 3: determine your business structure

The three main types of business structure* used by small businesses are:

sole trader / sole proprietor

partnership

company.

Some (but not all) of the advantages and disadvantages of the three types are set out below. It is important to choose the business structure that best suits your needs. Your accountant or solicitor can help you answer this question.

Step 4: assess profitability

Let’s face it. You go into business to make a profit, that’s essential if you are going to stay in business. But how can you tell whether or not you will make a profit?

There are many things that have to be taken into account in order to arrive at a fairly accurate estimate of the annual costs of running a business. When starting a new business, you will need to spend some time researching the likely costs, so that you can estimate your weekly or monthly “break-even” point.

You can use the following list of costs to help prepare your estimate. Not all costs will be applicable to every business, and depending on your particular business, there may be additional items that need to be considered.

Step 5: register business name

A business name is a trading name under which a business can operate. Registration of your business name effectively gives you the right to trade under that name in Australia.

Registration of a business name is compulsory when you trade under a name other than your own, however, it does not give you any proprietary rights to the name unless registered as a trademark.

Search for a business name – using the Australian Securities and Investments Commission National Names Index website

Register your business name – using the Australian Securities and Investments Commission ‘ASIC Connect’ website

Renew your business name – using the Australian Securities and Investments Commission ‘ASIC Connect’ website

Search for a trademark – using the Intellectual Property website

Search for a domain – using the .au Domain website.

Tips for success

Learn as much as you can about your proposed business. Ask questions. Join industry associations. Is there a need for the product or service you are going to offer?

Accept the fact that starting a business always takes more money than you anticipate.

Study successful competitors carefully.

Don’t go into business with the sole objective of making a lot of money. Chances are you won’t. But if you put service, quality, and customer satisfaction first – the money will follow.

Be willing to work harder and longer than you have ever worked before. Forget about the eight-hour day and the 40-hour week.

Keep complete and accurate records for tax purposes, for your banking needs, and most importantly, for your own guidance.

Ensure you have the right people for the right job.

Find a lawyer, accountant, banker, and insurance agent and confer with them as needed. Now is the time to develop these relationships.

Run it yourself. Beware of absentee ownership. No one will look after your money, your property and your business like you will.

Prepare a comprehensive business plan before investing your money into a business venture. Planning is the key to the survival of your business.

The Tasmanian government is currently making plans to add air capacity to promote immigration and tourism in the country, particularly in Tasmania.

“It’s vital that all stakeholders work together in order to take advantage and make the most of this tremendous opportunity,” says the Accommodation Association of Australia, whose members have more than 1,000 lodges across the state.

“Our industry has been pushing for greater air access to Tasmania for the past year and we welcome the extra seats and additional flights that will soon come on line. The airlines, the state government which established an Access Working Group to examine the issue, Tourism Tasmania and Tourism Industry Council Tasmania deserve credit for helping to bring about change,” says Accommodation Association of Australia Chief Executive Officer, Richard Munro.

Munro added, “There are direct economic links between more seats on flights to Tasmania and tourism investment, which provides accommodation operators with a much-needed injection of confidence, in order to make the additional air access become successful so that it continues.”

Australian tourism is one of the major industries in the state, and the government is keen on maximizing the benefits of this opportunity to promote Tasmania.

After his trip to Australia to promote the newest iPhone 5, Apple Co-Founder Steve Wozniak announced that he wants to obtain an Australian citizenship.

Inspired by the new National Broadband Network in Australia, Wozniak said he would still keep his US citizenship but intends to reap the benefits of becoming an Australian citizen.

“I spoke to [Australian Communications Minister Stephen Conroy] and they plan to roll it out to everyone in the country. I support [the national broadband plan] very much,” Wozniak told the Australian Financial Review.

During his interview with Brisbane’s radio station 4BC, the Apple co-founder said, “It turns out I can keep my American citizenship. I intend to call myself an Australian and feel an Australian, and study the history and become as much of a real citizen here as I can.”

The ambitious National Broadband Network (NBN) in Australia is expected to deliver high-speed internet access to reach approximately 93 per cent of the country’s businesses and households by June 2021.

In his interview with the Australian Financial Review, Wozniak said that he has told Conroy about his support for the country’s NBN plan and that he was ‘underway to become an Australian citizen.’

“It’s one of the reasons why I actually like this country and want to become a citizen. I live in a country where we don’t have any regulation of telecommunications,” Wozniak said.

If you are interested in Australian visas , contact Migration Expert for information and advice on which visa is best suited to you.

The Australian government recently inaugurated more than 10 Indian-origin permanent residents to be the key members of the ‘Subcontinent Ministerial Consultative Committee’.

The newly inducted members will inform and advise the Australian government on issues such as immigration, skill, education, trade, and foreign aid related to sub-continent communities in the country. Made up of 17 key members, the consultant committee represents the communities in Australia with Indian, Pakistani, Nepali, Sri Lankan, and Bangladeshi heritage.

Manoj Kumar, Melbourne-based committee member, said, “The 17-member committee has been formed with an aim to increase and improve engagement with wider ethnic communities on their issues of concern, to assist service delivery to those communities and to improve the dissemination of information on the government’s policies.”

Also an active member of Australia India Business Council Victoria, Kumar said his primary agenda would be to urge the government to simplify the rules of the International English Language Testing system for Australian immigrants wanting to obtain Permanent Residency (PR).

The Subcontinent Ministerial Consultative Committee is chaired by four members of the Parliament including Australian Immigration and Citizenship Minister Chris Bowen.

“I think that various communities have different issues and anything which enables communities to communicate with ministers and with government is a good thing. So we’ve established these committees, of which the Sub-Continental Ministerial Advisory Council is a very important one,” Bowen said in an interview.

Operating a small business is not just about working for yourself, it’s also about having the necessary management skills, industry expertise, technical skills, finance and of course a long-term vision to grow and succeed.

At the outset it’s important to consider whether you really understand what’s involved and whether you’re suited to business and self employment. Examine these issues:

reasons for getting into business

your goals and skills

income your business will need to generate

Advantages and disadvantages of establishing your own business.

What do I need before I get started?

Before you get started find out if people are interested in buying your products or services. Find out who your competitors are and whether the market can sustain your business.

Conduct some research to see whether your idea is really feasible. This will involve gathering, analyzing and evaluating information to help you formulate your business goals.

Some questions to consider are:

What product/service will you provide?

Is your idea feasible?

How will you protect your idea?

Is there a market for your product/service?

What skills do you need?

Who are your competitors?

What difference will you bring to the market?

Do you have the financial capacity?
